Nutritional Mesothelioma Treatments
Find Nutritional Treatments for Mesothelioma
What you eat and how
you treat your body can have a very powerful impact on your health and
quality of life, especially during mesothelioma treatments. Following
a healthy diet has a major impact on your cancer survivability. While proper
nutrition is not intended as a replacement for traditional treatments,
eating health-giving foods helps stimulate your immune system, deters cancer
growth and lessens the negative side effects of traditional therapies.
A healthy anti-mesothelioma diet always consists
of low saturated fats, moderate good fats, and a high fiber intake. Reducing
refined sugars, white flour, processed foods and additives is another great
way of improving the immune system function. Carbohydrates should be complex
and selected from foods with low glycemic indexes. Protein should be mostly
from plant (soy), not animal (whey), sources. Omega-3 fatty acids in the
form of flaxseed, flax oil or fish oil should be taken daily in proportional
amounts. Any person suffering from any form of cancer especially
mesothelioma should avoid alcohol, caffeine, smoking and trans-fatty acids
at all costs.
Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains should constitute
the majority of a mesothelioma patients diet. Fruits, vegetables, and whole
grains all have important nutrients, particularly substances known as
“phytochemicals” which strengthen and enhance the body's immune system.
Research has shown that people who eat a diet free of animal products and
low in saturated fats have a significantly lower cancer risk, and a much
higher treatment success rate after acquiring the disease. Also due to the
fact that cancer cells metabolize glucose, or sugar, for use as energy;
patients fighting mesothelioma should take in as few sugars and refined
carbohydrates (body uses like sugar) as possible.
